The client portal

The work, as you see it while it is being done

Sourcing is usually delivered as a list of company names in a message. This is delivered as a workspace: every manufacturer identified, what was checked about each one, what held and what did not, and the evidence sitting behind all of it.

The screens below are the portal’s actual interface components, rendered live in this page — not pictures of them.

Every figure shown is illustrative. Company names, models and prices are invented for this page: no manufacturer’s quoted price and no client’s commercial terms appear on a public site.

01The engagement overview

Where the work stands, on one screen. Stages open as they are completed, and a locked stage still shows what it covers and what has to happen before it opens — so the position is never a matter of asking.

Grey is not a failure. A checkpoint that has not been reached yet is a different finding from one that was checked and did not hold, and the portal never lets the two collapse into a single number.

The verification bar is counted from the record at the moment it is drawn, never stored, so it cannot drift from the evidence underneath it. Grey is deliberately the quietest of the three states: a checkpoint nobody has reached yet is a different finding from one that was checked and did not hold.

02The manufacturer directory

Every company identified, with its verification checkpoints in the same six positions on every row. The point of the directory is not the names — anyone can produce names. It is the column that says which of them own a factory, and which of them have not been checked at all.

A directory in which everything passes is a directory nobody checked. The row set aside here is the shape of a real finding from the pilot engagement: a company that presented as a manufacturer disclosed under direct questioning that production sits with a different firm entirely — which then became a manufacturer lead in its own right.

03Price at your volume

Unit prices held with the bands they were quoted in, then resolved at the quantity you are buying rather than the quantity the factory chose to lead with. A price with no minimum order, no lead time and no validity period is recorded as indicative, because that is what it is.

KW-S3Huizhou KaiweiIndicative$205.00Not quoted at this volume
One of these prices came from a chat message with no minimum order quantity, no lead time and no validity period. It is recorded as indicative and is not treated as a quotation until the factory puts it in writing.

Prices are as quoted by the manufacturer, ex works, and exclude freight, insurance, duty and clearance. A quotation whose bands stop short of your volume answers with a sentence rather than with its cheapest band at a quantity nobody is buying.

Unit price is rarely the cost. Docking, platform licences, cloud retention, freight, duty and certification each sit behind it, and the engagement is largely the work of pulling them into the open before a decision is made rather than after.

04The specification comparison

Two models set against each other attribute by attribute, translated from the Chinese specification sheets, with the rows that differ marked. In the pilot engagement this is where 19 products and 244 specifications became a decision that could be defended.

RY-820 — manufacturer specification sheet, received 12 March, translated from Chinese and checked against the published catalogue.

ZH-D9 — manufacturer specification sheet, received 19 March, translated from Chinese. Certification claim raised as an open question on 21 March.

Two models published with identical specifications under different part numbers is a finding, not a coincidence. So is one quotation naming two different chipsets for the same unit. The comparison exists to make both visible.

What a sheet does not say is as much a finding as what it does. An encryption claim with no algorithm named, or a certification claimed with no certificate produced, is recorded exactly that way rather than being tidied into a tick.

In plain terms

What the portal gives you

  • Every finding with its provenance

Nothing in the portal is an assertion. Each checkpoint carries who checked it, on what date, and against which document — a licence, a catalogue, a transcript. A finding you cannot trace back is a finding you cannot rely on.

  • Quotations resolved at your own volume

Prices are held with their quantity bands, minimum order, lead time and the period the factory will hold them for, then resolved at the quantity you are actually buying. Where no band covers your volume, the portal says so instead of showing you the cheapest number on the sheet.

  • The documents in one place

Licences, catalogues, specification sheets and quotations, each attached to the company and the stage it belongs to, released as the work that produced it is completed.

  • Questions answered in thread

Ask against the finding itself rather than in an email that nobody can find in four months. The question, the answer and the date stay attached to the thing they concern.

  • A decision record you keep

What was decided, when, on what evidence, and what the alternatives were. The engagement ends; the record does not. It is yours, and it is the thing that lets you answer a question about this purchase two years from now.

Access is by named user. Every write to the record — a finding, an approval, a released document — is attributed to the person who made it and to the moment it happened, on both sides of the relationship. The engagement ends at handover: xcommerce does not arrange shipping, customs clearance or freight payment, does not hold client funds, and does not take title to goods. You contract and pay the manufacturer directly.

If you are buying from Chinese manufacturing and want the checking done before the money moves, this is how the engagement runs.
